Velo Bling Bike Parts & Accessories
Velo Bling Designs is a U.S.-based jewelry and household goods maker. Its novelty stems from its source materials: every piece is made from recycled bike parts. Some pieces show their provenance clearly, like the ladder earrings made from chain rollers; others, such as the hematite anklet, reveal construction from spoke nipples only on closer examination. The catalogue is available online and from bike shops and retailers throughout the U.S.
Founded by avid mountain bikers Ed and Margaret Dunne, what started as a hobby became a profession: friends enjoyed the works they'd made for themselves, asked for their own, and a company was born. Still in Colorado, the couple makes each piece by hand from recycled bike parts.
Pieces vary from one to the next, thanks to the unusual source material. The cog for this tree ornament may have had a much different life than the one in the picture. Each part is thoroughly cleansed with environmentally-friendly degreasers and solvents before being incorporated into one of Velo's novel designs.
Wall clocks from disc rotors, chainlink keychains, bottle stoppers and bookmarks, the variety of household items is impressive. There's a mobile, of all things, suspending colorful anodized cogs on a freely-rotating frame of aluminum wire.
The jewelry collection is the prime mover of Velo Bling. Pieces for men and women are available in a wide range of designs, some durable enough to be worn on the bike, others slender and delicate. Styles are all over the map: a tasteful chain-link bracelet sits next to a pair of orange and blue pendant earrings busy enough to distract a bronco.
Velo Bling makes interesting adornments, for home or person. Stop by your local retailer or the online shop and browse a bit.
