SmartHalo was born out of the interlacement of sophisticated technologies and elegant simplicity. It’s a device that provides advanced features without overwhelming cyclists who need to focus on the many stimuli of urban environments. With an overwhelmingly successful Kickstarter campaign as a launching pad, we are now more than 15 avid cyclists and geeks working on turning this idea into reality within our offices located in North America’s biking capital: Montreal. But SmartHalo is also more than that: it’s a long-term vision on how bikes can improve society.

For us, biking is more than a transportation method or a hobby. It’s a way of life. It is synonymous with a healthy lifestyle, greener environments and smarter cities. It is part of a progressive movement we want to be a part of. The best part? Adopting the bicycle is easy: most trips in cities are faster by bike than by car, and owning a bike costs a whole less to you. It also costs less to governments, since it has less of an impact on cities’ infrastructures. It’s a win-win situation, really.

Each bike on the road reduces carbon emissions. But to democratise bicycles, cities need to adapt to greener transportations methods by adding bike paths, bike sharing services and adopting cycling favourable policies. We want to encourage cycling adoption by not only making biking safer and more intuitive, but by also being an influencer on bike-centric city planning.

How can we become a powerful force pushing for greener and smarter city planning? By making biking more accessible, we might convince more people to bike. With this critical mass, we can gather anonymised data on cyclist’s habits to better help city planners design smart cities, whether it’s determining the ideal location for bike paths and improving cyclist flow in cities. Just by riding your bike, you help designing your city.
