Based at Coste di Maser in the Province of Treviso, the company was set up in 1962 by a master in sports footwear production, GAZZOLA ERNESTO who gave the company its name. Today, Gaerne is a leader in the sports footwear sector, sold throughout the world.
GAERNE initially offered a vast range of leisure footwear, with particular reference to mountain pursuits.
During later years, as the company grew, it diversified its products to include development of new lines.
In 1977 GAERNE began making motorcycling boots, meeting with immediate sales and sports success and just the year after, GAERNE began conquering the world. Requests poured in from EUROPE, the USA, CANADA and AUSTRALIA and JAPAN.
The quality of the leather, the meticulous workmanship and the exclusive design made GAERNE boots a favourite among the most demanding riders.
The fruitful collaboration between GAERNE and the World Champion rider Heikki Mikkola began. In 1978 he won the world title in the most prestigious category, the 500 cc CROSS.
During the first 30 years GAERNE win 30 World Titles, thanks to very famous riders as Graham Noyce (Motocross World Champion – class 500cc), Erik Geboers (5 times Motocross World Champion), Eddy Lejeune (3 times Trial World Champion), Pekka Wehkonen (Motocross World Champion – class 125 cc), Dave Strjibos (Motocross World Champion), Wayne Gardner (Road Racing World Champion – class 500cc), G.M. Rossi (many times Enduro World Champion), Alex Chiodi (Motocross World Champion – class 125cc), D. Lampkin (Trial World Champion), Joel Smets (4 times Motocross World Champion), Mickael Pichon (2 times Motocross World Champion), Chris Vermeulen (Supersport World Champion), Takahisa Fujinami (Trial World Champion).
Many other riders get prestigious results and they contribute to increment the GAERNE results.
CYCLING AND THE MOUNTAIN BIKE
GAERNE made its debut In the world of cycling halfway through the 1980s, right from the start linking its name with the most promising cyclists and real champions - the legendary Carrera Team at the time of Chiappucci and Pantani is just one example.
GAERNE cycling shoes were an immediate success. A distinctive style “signature” together with innovatory technical characteristics such as the micrometric closure, Rilsan sole, wearability and comfort enabled the company to conquer both the Italian and international markets.
1986 Kelly, the legendary Irishman, became the company’s first testimonial and brought GAERNE its first laurels with the “Vuelta” and other important wins.
In 1987 the collaboration with the Carrera team began and the wins flooded in straight away: Leali became Italian Champion and the slogan “Leali with wings on his heels” was born;
Leali and Ghiotti: the golden pair, won the Barocchi Trophy;
Bontempi, a cyclist from other times, won stages of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, also winning the Yellow Jersey;
Roche won stages in the Tour de France and was in the forefront of cycle racing in the 1980s.
Collaboration with Chiappucci began and he immediately became a legend: GAERNE and the “Diablo” travelled all over the world;
Pantani: the debuts, the exploits and the first true wins.
Several years later, collaboration began between ERNESTO GAZZOLA, founder of GAERNE, and BRUNO REVERBERI, infallible talent scout. This immediately proved to be a winning combination.
From the first agreements with the legendary manager came teams such as the SCRIGNO-GAERNE in 97/98, the NAVIGARE-GAERNE in ’99 and the PANARIA-GAERNE in 2000.
Start of collaboration with Rebellin, a mainstay of GAERNE and a world famous cyclist;
And 2000 was again packed with success: Konichew: the east wind bringing numerous wins;
Tosatto and Gutierrez the rising stars of European cycling took turns at the Pink Jersey during the last Giro d’Italia;
Petacchi won at Luxembourg and the Midi Libre;
And then Missaglia, winner of a race in the World Cup.
Santos Gonzales was in the limelight during the Vuelta, leading for several days and also winning the final timed stage.
Frigo came first in the Giro di Campania and so it went on up to the grand finale: SPRUCH - a splendid second in the World Championship, VAINSTAINS- after a season of marvellous wins such as the Tirreno Adriatico, the climax came when he won the World Championship title and GAERNE became World Champion!
In parallel with development of cycle shoes for road racing, GAERNE also took on board the new passion for the MTB, a sport which exploded unexpectedly, winning over young and not so young cycling enthusiasts.
In this speciality, GAERNE again entrusted its image to prestigious testimonials. Marco Bui, Annabella Stropparo and the World Champion and gold medal at the Sidney Olympic Games MIGUEL MARTINEZ are the most significant examples.
And as passion takes first place, for a number of years now ERNESTO GAZZOLA has been promoter of the famous “GAERNE MOUNTAIN BIKE TROPHY”, a prestigious international cross country competition bringing the sector’s most famous names together at the starting tape each year.
