As a follow up to our six best mountain bike climbs article we wanted to share a movie about one of the places mentioned. Rotorua is the spiritual home of mountain biking in New Zealand; the whole area is full of many miles of singletrack with a variety of surfaces and technicality.
This movie from a few years ago captures a crew from Australia setting off to Rotorua and surrounding areas to ride the Whaka 100, (love the sign "what's long and hard and in the bush? The Whaka 100"), and the 2010 World SingleSpeed Champs. They also spend a healthy amount of time soaking up all the trail riding on offer as well as the immensely beautiful countryside that is New Zealand.
I would strongly urge anyone in the US who is looking for an international mountain biking trip to seriously consider the Rotorua area as a base of operations. The riding is awesome, the people speak funny but are friendly, fun and accommodating and everything is within a stone's throw: epic singletrack, beautiful landscapes, good food and the beer is pretty good too!
What more could any typical mountain biker want?
